We value community, neighborhood public schools that are thriving community centers, and we believe that every child deserves a quality education in a safe, supportive learning environment that welcomes authentic parent engagement, and are filled with highly effective teachers who love our children and our community.
Action Now members are active in their neighborhood public schools and fight for adequate resources and a community voice in our children’s education. Action Now has fought against school closings and turnarounds that displace children and teachers, disrupt the community and increase the racial achievement gap. We have also been working to get an Elected School Board in Chicago, instead of a school board appointed by the mayor that is made up of businessmen and others that have no connection to Chicago’s communities or public schools. Action Now believes in a community-based approach to education where parents, teachers, students and community members are the decision-makers.

Action Now is also a member of the:
Grow Your Own Teacher Program
If we want good neighborhood public schools, then we need teachers that have the cultural competency to interact with the children, parents and community. This is why Action Now is a convening member of the Grow Your Own Teacher program, which links community organizations, higher education institutions, and school districts that support parents, community members, and paraprofessionals in low-income communities to attend college to become highly qualified teachers.
